We're going camping!

Yippee! We're actually going camping! I didn't think that was possible at all this summer since Caleb is in class every day, but he talked his teachers into letting him take several tests after we get back so we are leaving for Idaho tomorrow! (He had some pretty big motivation because it's HIS family reunion we're going to, and his brother is going to let him borrow his dirt bike to ride! He hasn't ridden in a year--since his bike got stolen.) Anyway, we'll be camping near Boise for a whole week! The only part I am dreading is that 17 hour drive to get there...
Anyone have any great car tips for keeping toddlers happy that they'd like to share with me? I need all the help I can get. See you when we get back--and I'm sure I'll have LOTS of pictures to post!

Well, I'm glad YOU'RE excited about going camping :) We're going camping this week too near Salmon, ID and I'm NOT looking forward to it...lets just say I'm not exactly a wilderness girl :) Anyway, my only suggestion for car rides, is get a movie that they LOVE and a portable dvd player and you're good to go, haha. Good luck and hoep you have fun!

They say a dvd player is a must!!! My car will have one somehow when I'm driving far distances with Easton. I hear they are lifesavers. Have fun! It's always nice and rejuvinating to get out into nature and to get some fresh air.

So our family of three just got back (1 hour ago) from our trip to ID and we put 1800 miles on the car...it sure feels like we drove forever. Only like 12 hours. So I can understand (atleast on a certain level) what you all are and will be going through. Keep smilling!

Wish you were coming to this side of the state...
I'd have to agree that the DVD player is your best bet... I'm not a huge fan of them in cars for short distances, but for a long distance, very handy. Good luck with that!
Have you decided what to do about your job situation yet?

Yay for the camping trip! I'll look forward to pictures...

We're all about making our kid sleep while we travel. We usually leave at night, so that Ben sleeps most or all of the way there. There's also a trick you can do with Benadryl :) Your pediatrician can give you the maximum daily dosage for her weight. Better for planes, but it could work for probably half the car ride.

All I can say is that I will not be a safe mom, because here is my suggestion:

TRANQUILIZER.

Have fun camping. When I travel with Presten its MOVIES, MOVIES, MOVIES. It works for a few hours.

Also, I do have the "Host" but my mom has it right not. I would have totally let you take it. Sorry!! I know that Sara Frei has it also. You might want to try her. I would call you back with this info but Andy seems to have taken my phone to school today on accident so I have no way to call anyone.

We have a portable DVD player that we use, and I like it but Charley tends to get bored after about 1 movie. So I would suggest cool new snacks that she doesn't usually get, crayons & coloring books (make sure you track all of them down before parking your car for a while in the heat), music CD's that she likes to listen to & sing to (participation required by parents too). Also lots of books that she likes to look at, and pictures in an album of people that she's going to see while on your trip. Plus, try to stop occasionally so she can get out of the car & run around. I usually like to just drive & make it as fast as I can, but I think that's a little harder on Charley, so I try to be laid back. Maybe try to stop and eat at a McDonald with a play place so she can get some energy out. Hope this helps!

We have dvd player but I also just found this great idea from a friend. We've started using them in church. http://www.mormonchic.com/crafty/filefolders.asp

Natalie loves them and they're really easy to make and use. Probably 2 or 3 would last for a while!

I've skimmed through the posts here and movies are good-another suggestion I have for those folder things is that you could price check laminating by the foot at Office Max or you can buy some self laminating sheets (think contact paper, but stiffer) at walmart. And one suggestion I got that hasn't been mentioned:

BUBBLES!!!!

What you do is turn the fan vent on REALLY high and let it do the "blowing" for you. I haven't done it myself, but another mom I know SWEARS by it. What kid doesn't love bubbles? Good luck! Too bad we aren't closer!
